Academic and creative conference ‘Experience and visions: poet Velta Sniķere’, an online forum organised by University of Latvia Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, took place on 18 December. Event marked the 100th birthday of poet Velta Sniķere as she is preparing for the celebration of her birthday on 25 December. President of Latvia Egils Levits delivered congratulatory remarks at the opening of the event.
Dear cherished Madam Sniķere,
Today we celebrate your hundredth birthday. You are a truly unique and iconic personality.
You have left a lasting trail in our national culture with your brilliant input.
Your sharp, spiritual journey and experience-weathered mind and soul revolutionised Latvian poetry. Your English translation of dainas helped other cultures discover the richness of wisdom embedded in our folk songs.
You have always remained true and loyal to yourself, your core convictions, worldviews and Latvianness.
You are almost as old as the Latvian State. Your life will always remain a part of our nation’s history.
My warmest congratulations to you, Madam Sniķere, on your big birthday. Many happy returns of the day and keep well!
