President of Latvia Egils Levits today met with Mrs Bärbel Bas, President of the German Bundestag, at the Riga Castle to discuss the security situation in Europe.
E. Levits and B. Bas agreed that Ukraine should become a NATO member state soon after the end of the war in order to ensure lasting peace in Europe. President Levits also emphasised that after winning the war Ukraine will have the strongest armed forces in Europe with the best combat experience, which will be an important addition to NATO's capabilities.
The meeting also discussed holding Russia accountable for violations of international law before a special ad hoc international tribunal. The President of Latvia pointed out that political will needed to be mobilised not only in Europe but also in the Global South on this issue. The President of the German Bundestag assured that the issue was also being discussed in German society.
