During the talks, President Rinkēvičs paid particular attention to the upcoming NATO summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled to take place in The Hague, the Netherlands, on 24–25 June. He emphasised the example set by the Baltic and Nordic countries, which have significantly increased investment in their defence capabilities and strengthened cooperation in the defence industry. “At the NATO summit in The Hague, it is essential that all Allies demonstrate a united commitment to substantially increase defence spending to ensure that NATO's capability objectives are met. United, capable, and resolute, we can ensure effective deterrence against the long-term threat posed by Russia,” President Rinkēvičs stated.
In discussing bilateral relations between Latvia and Finland, the two Presidents highlighted the close economic and defence cooperation, including the collaboration between the naval forces of both countries to enhance security in the Baltic Sea. President Rinkēvičs and President Stubb agreed that NATO and the European Union must make full use of all available practical and legal instruments to strengthen the security of the Baltic Sea and counter Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”.
