Denmark played a very important role in providing broad support to restored Latvia at the beginning of the 1990s. Therefore, the official visit of Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark to Latvia is a special occasion. Many years ago, the visit of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark to Latvia was a historic occasion because it was the first royal visit after the restoration of the independence of our country.
President of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis emphasises, “Today, Denmark is an important partner of Latvia regarding defence and regional security. Denmark’s active involvement in NATO activities of collective defence, especially the initiative to establish a NATO division headquarters in Latvia, is significant for strengthening the regional security.”
“Latvia and Denmark have close political and economic relations. There is active cooperation going on in education, culture, defence, and many other areas of mutual interest. The Danish Cultural Institute in Riga facilitates intensive cultural exchange. The year of Latvia’s Centenary marks a new stage in the cultural cooperation between the two countries because the work on restoring the territory of former Tobacco Factory has begun by creating a Creative Industries Quarter there with the support of Denmark this year. It is a great gift for Latvia on its centenary,” notes the President of Latvia.
The President of Latvia said that Denmark had always been among the major trade partners of Latvia. We appreciate the investments Denmark has made so far, and we look forward to further cooperation, especially in innovation and technology. “There is also close cooperation between Latvia and Denmark in several regional formats. Both countries share common concerns about regional security, prosperity, and sustainable development, as well as a shared understanding of the future and values of Europe,” said Raimonds Vējonis.
