Raimonds Vējonis
Valsts prezidents: Latviju un Zviedriju vieno līdzīgas vērtības – demokrātija, brīvība un solidaritāte, un mēs kopā tās aizstāvēsim
“Latvia and Sweden enjoy close bilateral relations and long-term cooperation in almost every field. We share similar values like democracy, freedom, and solidarity, and we work together to defend them. I am convinced that we will be able to overcome future challenges by cooperating in security and defence and in the protection of the information space and cybersecurity,” stressed Raimonds Vējonis

when meeting with Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and His Royal Highness Prince Daniel in the Riga Castle on Friday, 27 April 2018.

The President of Latvia noted that Latvia and Sweden had the potential to establish closer cooperation in innovation, digitalisation, and new technologies. It is vital for both Latvia and Sweden to form a united and strong European Union and to continue developing the transatlantic cooperation.

Emphasising the role of high-quality education in the development of a state, Raimonds Vējonis especially noted the close cooperation between Latvia and Sweden in education. “The first Latvian peasant schools were opened in the Swedish-ruled Vidzeme. Today, we appreciate Sweden’s contribution to the establishment and development of the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga and the Riga Graduate School of Law. They are highly regarded educational institutions that train future leaders of business and public administration from the Baltic States, but also Eastern Partnership countries,” stated the President of Latvia.

During the visit, a painting was unveiled in the Riga Castle – a replica of the portrait of Erik Jonsson Dahlberg, the Governor-General of Vidzeme and Riga. The picture is painted according to the original materials of Swedish painter David Klocker Ehrenstrahle by Ms Kristīne Ķibermane, the student of the Art Academy of Latvia.

In the afternoon, the visit to the National Library of Latvia is planned, where the donation of the book by HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and HRH Prince Daniel to the People’s Bookshelf will be held, as well as the royal guests will attend exhibition “In the Trails of Boat Refugees” together with the President of Latvia and First Lady Iveta Vējone.
