President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis emphasised, “The interests of national security and the existence of democracy include assessment of the compliance of people with the criteria to grant access to state secrets in order to protect state secrets and the common interests of the society. Therefore, such access may not be granted automatically.

The laws of Latvia ensure a balance between the interests of national security and the interests of democracy.”

The President of Latvia reminds that the Constitutional Court of Latvia has assessed the regulation concerning the provision of special permits for accessing state secrets and has acknowledged that the interests of national security require that access to state secrets would be provided only to the individuals whose personal characteristics would exclude the risk that a state secret could be disclosed, thus jeopardising national security as well as national economic or political interests.

“Latvia is a law-based state, and no one, including the President of Latvia, may affect the decision of the security authorities regarding the issue of a special permit for access to state secrets at both national and EU and NATO level,” stated Raimonds Vējonis.

The President of Latvia calls on the political parties to be responsible and to devote all the efforts to form a government in order to reach agreement on the outline of the next coalition and majority support of the Saeima, potential members of the government, and the priorities to be accomplished before 10 December 2018. In the near future, the President of Latvia does not plan to hold separate consultations with the political parties on government formation.
