On 17 August, President of Latvia Egils Levits had a virtual meeting with President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and President of Poland Andrzej Sebastian Duda to agree on the joint position of all four countries on situation in Belarus.

All four presidents expressed clear and unanimous support of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland for repeat presidential election and urged Belarus to ensure adherence of such elections to core democratic election principles and allow international observers to monitor the process.

Presidents of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland believe a European Union summit should take place as soon as possible to decide on sanctions against Belarusian officials who authorised persecution of members of the public or falsified election results.

Egils Levits, Kersti Kaljulaid, Gitanas Nausėda and Andrzej Duda also noted that UN Security Council and other international organisations could play an important role in resolving the situation.

President of Latvia Egils Levits is planning to discuss the matter with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in a phone call later today.
