On 27 March, President Edgars Rinkēvičs held a meeting with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Admiral Rob Bauer at the Riga Castle to discuss the reinforcement of NATO’s eastern flank, preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington, as well as support to Ukraine and its integration into NATO.

The President stressed the importance of implementing the decisions taken at the Madrid and Vilnius NATO Summits and expressed his appreciation for the presence of NATO allied troops in Latvia. "NATO must implement the decisions taken at the Madrid and Vilnius NATO Summits as well as the Regional Defence Plans, particularly about deterrence and defence. The Alliance's deterrence capabilities must be strengthened and the territory of NATO members must be protected from the first centimetre," E. Rinkēvičs noted.

The President of Latvia pointed out that the presence of NATO allied troops in Latvia provides a practical demonstration of NATO's collective defence. E. Rinkēvičs also confirmed that Latvia as the host nation is committed to investing in military infrastructure to provide optimal conditions for the allied presence, as well as continuously enhancing its own defence capabilities.

During the meeting, the President of Latvia stressed the need for NATO to provide consistent and long-term support to Ukraine to secure its victory, and endorsed Ukraine's closer integration into NATO.
