Valsts prezidents un Andra Levite piedalās Lielajā talkā

On 24 April, President of Latvia Egils Levits, First Lady Andra Levite and staff of the Presidential chancery joined the Big Cleanup Day initiative and campaign ‘Million candles for group home’ and helped tidy up the surroundings of ‘Movement for independent living in Latvia’, an NGO working for the cause.

‘The Big Cleanup Day is the largest national grassroots movement. Anyone can join it to make our country cleaner, more beautiful and better. This movement plays a vital role in linking generations together, urging people to seek harmony with nature. Our green links are probably stronger than elsewhere in Europe. That is what makes us special. It is our asset. I believe it also serves as an encouragement to everyone to be with nature, not against it,’ said President Levits’ opening the Big Cleanup Day near at the Big Christopher statue on 11 November riverfront.

Result of the day: container full of tyres, electrical appliances, clothes, plastic and glass, tens of bags of solid waste. First steps towards beautiful, clean surroundings for modern group home for young people with special needs, which will be built in future.

The Big Cleanup Day is the largest grassroots environmental movement and tidy up campaign in Latvia and the world. Altogether, coordinators registered 1635 locations for this year’s spring clean, of which 1 082 involved cleaning rubbish and 553 received various upgrades. 333 of all activities were privately organised.
