President of Latvia Egils Levits, who is currently on an official visit in Slovakia, met with Speaker of Slovakian parliament, National Council, Boris Kollár, today, emphasising the special role of parliament in strengthening NATO’s eastern flank and promoting bilateral economic ties.

President of Latvia thanked Speaker of Slovakia’s National Council for parliament’s decision to approve mandate for permanent presence of Slovakian troops deployed to Latvia in scope of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia. Speaker Kollár thanked Latvia for excellent host nation support and underlined that approval of mandate was also important for Slovakia. ‘It is a strong assurance of our nation’s commitment to NATO’s collective defence,’ Boris Kollár stressed.

Meeting also focused on deepening of economic cooperation between Latvia and Slovakia. There is a huge potential for deepening trade and economic ties between the two countries in areas such as IT and high technologies, stressed President Levits.

Egils Levits also reminded Speaker Kollár that Riga will host the Three Seas Summit this June and Slovakian president has already accepted the invitation to attend. In addition to political debate, this event will also include a Business Forum, civic society and parliamentary dimension and related events.
