On 10 July, President Edgars Rinkēvičs took part in the “World Latvian Economic and Innovations Forum 2025” at the National Library of Latvia. In his address to forum participants, the President of Latvia emphasised three key priorities: national security, demographic development, competitiveness and education.
“We all wish to see our Latvia safe, thriving, educated, and prosperous. And these three priorities – national security, demographic development, competitiveness and education – are the issues we speak about extensively in Latvia. These are the matters discussed in the Saeima and government, including during the ongoing particularly difficult budget planning process. I believe we can cooperate in achieving these goals together.
When it comes to security, Latvians abroad have always been very active in explaining Latvia’s and the Baltic region’s situation, engaging with their political representatives – whether in governments or parliaments – and explaining the implications of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. I would like to sincerely thank you for that and urge you to continue this cooperation. I am aware that many of you are already committed to this cause and are seeking further ways to contribute. We are fully committed to continuing this work, as it is clear that the security situation will not change quickly. We must allocate not only financial resources – 5% for defence and security – but also build and strengthen our capabilities, not only cooperate closely with NATO Allies, but continue to explain and maintain awareness of the security situation in your countries of residence.
“The other key issue is demography. You are aware how this works, so I will not go into great detail or lecture anyone. However, I would like to emphasise the significance of this topic, this priority is currently at the centre of attention for the government, the Saeima, and the wider society.
And finally, education and competitiveness. These are likely the subjects you will discuss the most. I am pleased that we have already managed to move forward with many cooperation projects and attract investments. You have been active in both facilitating these investments and contributing your own work. I believe it is vital for Latvia to invest in and develop education and science to the greatest extent possible. Very soon, the Artificial Intelligence Centre will begin its operations. Very soon, I believe we will also hear promising news and see significant development in the defence industry. These are areas we currently view as key development priorities, but that does not mean we should limit ourselves to them. I hope that during this forum, new ideas, opportunities, and connections will emerge. The same principle applies to education. Many of our young people go abroad to study. At the same time, we are pleased to see many international students choosing to study in Latvia. I sincerely hope that those currently studying abroad will return to Latvia. How can we make our education system more competitive, more engaging? What ideas can we share so that young people abroad choose to come back and contribute? There is certainly no shortage of things to discuss,” said President Edgars Rinkēvičs in his address to the participants.
